Got a special surprise in my change :)

At the Post Office yesterday I received a 1943S nickel in my change. I've never even seen a silver nickel before, so that was kind of cool. I like the large mint mark design. Also, the toned coloring makes it stand out.

It is well circulated (maybe XF), and not worth much, but still pretty cool to see one in your change.

Keep going back for stamps if you can, you may get more.A supermarket by my work had a customer buying stuff with 90% for a couple months and we got several as change by going there often and asking the cashier as we checked out.She diden't care, they were just old change to her.

I think the big "S" means silver -- not a mint mark, but I could be wrong.

I believe the silver wartime nickels all have big mint marks.
S = San Francisco
D = Denver
P = Philadelphia

Here's a quick & dirty scan of a 1943P wartime nickel, versus a newer (1986P) nickel. I've always been able to pick out the wartime nickels pretty quickly from their brownish color, as well as the slightly "greasy" feel if you rub them between your thumb & index finger.

If you know anyone that works in a cash office at any major retail establishment tell them to call for anything interesting. My sister knows the cash office manager at the local Wal Mart. She calls my sister one night and and tells her to come over and see what she found. So my sister goes to the store and purchased 5 silver eagles for 5 dollars. Unbelievable but someone had gone through the store earlier in the day and spent the silver eagles at face value.

It does have an interesting texture and color. That's what grabbed my attention to look at the date.

No, it means San Francisco, as in San Francisco Mint.

nice find. I recently bought over $200 in nickels from the bank, went thru them to complete my collection, only found 2 silver ones. It's becoming harder and harder to find them in changes.

Ha! You must be the jealous person who rated this thread only 3 stars.

*grin* I swear it wasn't me. Even when I do rate a thread it is usually to try and bump up the rating. Never works though, my vote don't count.

35%. Too expensive to refine though.

Yep. No nickel in them (needed that for the bombs). It's probably worth about $0.40.

Re: Got a special surprise in my change :)

Over the last 10 years I have gotten about 3 of them in change. Very rare find indeed.

latemetal 12-19-2008 05:20 PM

I thought it was the manganese...

That made it not worth refining. :thumb.aspx:

I think the costly part is trying to separate the silver from the manganese. HH Mark
